In the barn of Emir Kusturica’s farmstead, a stone’s throw from Mećavnik, a breed of native cows are reared – Gatačko cattle. This breed is above all characterised by its exceptional quality of milk, but, unlike purebred cows, milk yield is lower.
The cattle originates from Gatačko Polje in Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska) and is noted for its good health and high quality milk and meat. The average production life of a cow is 7-8 years and they produce between 3600 and 4500 litres of milk per year, with 3.9% butterfat and 3.4% total protein. The meat from the male calves and bulls is also used in Mećavnik’s restaurants.
The cattle are reared in total comfort, with state-of-the-art ventilation and – classical music, which is played 24 hours a day.
